Having a website is worthless if it does not generate inquiries. These are the five failures I see over and over when reviewing business sites, and how to spot them yourself.
How to spot it: go to Google PageSpeed Insights, paste your site address, and check the mobile result.
Why it matters: this is the biggest and most invisible leak. People do not write to tell you "your site was slow", they just leave. And Google also penalizes slow sites in search results.
What to do: compress your images (usually 80% of the problem), remove plugins you do not use, and if the site is still slow, consider rebuilding it with modern technology.
How to spot it: open your site on your phone. Do you have to zoom in to read? Are buttons hard to tap? Does anything overflow the screen?
Why it matters: more than half your visitors arrive from a phone. If the mobile experience is poor, you are losing most of your audience.
What to do: the design must be thought out for mobile first, not adapted afterwards. Readable text without zooming, large buttons, and nothing overflowing.
How to spot it: show your home page to someone who does not know your business. Give them five seconds and ask: what do we sell and what should you do now?
Why it matters: if they do not get it in five seconds, they leave. People do not read, they scan.
What to do: your headline should say exactly what you do and for whom. One main visible button without scrolling ("Request a quote", "Book a call"). Avoid empty phrases like "innovative quality solutions".
How to spot it: search Google for your business name plus your city. Then search for the service you offer plus your city (for example "plumber in Thunder Bay"). Do you appear?
Why it matters: if you do not appear, you depend only on referrals. You are letting go of everyone already searching for what you sell.
What to do: register your business on Google Business Profile (free and very effective for local businesses), make sure each page has its own title and description, and mention your city in the content.
How to spot it: count how many clicks it takes from your home page to actually message you.
Why it matters: every extra step loses people. A form with ten fields converts far worse than one with three.
What to do: put your phone visible at the top, offer several channels (form, WhatsApp, email), ask only for what is essential, and clearly confirm the message was sent.
Install an analytics tool (Google Analytics is free) and look at two things:
All five problems are fixable. Some, like compressing images or clarifying your main message, you can solve this week without technical help.
